Area's big leaguers set to enter offseason of uncertainty

October 5 - Three of Northern Virginia’s current Major League players - Cleveland’s Brandon Guyer and San Francisco’s Javier Lopez and Jarrett Parker - begin play this week in the postseason.

The other four have already entered an offseason that is full of uncertainty for local products, the majority of whom will enter free agency following the conclusion of the World Series.

Guyer, 30, is arbitration-eligible after earning $1.185 million with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Indians. The former Herndon High School standout hit .333 in 38 games after being acquired at the trade deadline, and the outfielder played a big role in the Indians winning the American League Central Division.

Lopez, 39, was again a key member of the Giants’ bullpen in his seventh season with the club, but the Robinson grad is in the final season of a 3-year, $13 million contract he signed prior to the 2014 season. The club has options the next two years on the 27-year-old Parker (Colonial Forge), who earned the MLB minimum of $507,500 this season.

Miami Marlins first baseman Justin Bour (Westfield), who missed significant time in the second half with a high ankle sprain, earned $537,000 this season and the club has an option for next year. All indications are that Miami will pick up the option on the former Bulldogs and George Mason University star, who will be 29 next season and has been the team’s regular first baseman since early in 2015.

Brandon Snyder (Westfield), a 29-year-old first baseman who made his return to the big leagues this season after a three-year hiatus, is a free agent after earning the league minimum this season. Also becoming free agents after making the league minimum are 28-year-old Paul Clemens (Robinson), who hooked on with the San Diego Padres after being waived midseason by Miami, as well as 28-year-old New York Yankees reliever Conor Mullee (Broad Run), who finished the season on the disabled list after starring at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and making three appearances with the Yankees.

Here are this year’s regular season statistics from the local big leaguers.
