August 7 - Over a two-month period beginning the first week of September, the magazine will highlight the 10 greatest high school teams in Northern Virginia history.
Numerous current and former coaches, players and members of the media will be consulted as an initial list of nominees that will be trimmed to the final 10, with one team being revealed weekly beginning on Sept. 1 and culminating on Nov. 3. Eligible teams must be within the magazine’s coverage area in Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Spotsylvania and Stafford counties, have won a state championship, or have been nominated by a current or former coach.
The list of nominees includes Northern Virginia public school teams that have won a Virginia High School League (VHSL) state championship, and the local teams that won Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) titles.
From 1971-2013, the state’s public schools were grouped into three classifications. Prior to that, there was one classification from 1968-70, with sporadic state champions being crowned between 1916-54. There are no state champions listed in the VHSL’s record book between 1955-67, no were there any during either of the two World Wars.
In 2014, the state’s public schools were divided into six classifications.
The VISAA has been naming state champions since 1992, first starting with two classifications before expanding to three groups in 2004.
Paul VI Catholic has won an area-high five state titles, followed by Madison with four and West Springfield with three. Loudoun Valley, Potomac and W.T. Woodson - the only area public school to win back-to-back state titles - are the only other schools with multiple state championship teams.
