June 22 - Paul Clemens, a graduate of Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, was promoted from Triple-A New Orleans on Monday and inserted into the starting rotation for the Miami Marlins for that night's game, taking a no-decision in a 5-3 loss to the visiting Colorado Rockies.
After going 6-4 with a 4.30 earned run average in 14 starts with New Orleans, Clemens was elevated to take the place of the struggling Justin Nicolino, who was 2-4 with a 5.17 ERA in 10 starts with Miami.
On Monday, Clemens allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings in his first big league appearance since 2014, when he made 13 relief appearances with Houston.
"I'm excited to help the team win," Clemens told the Associated Press. "There are a lot of ingredients in here that can go a long way. I just want to be another piece to that."
The Marlins are 37-34 and 5.5 games behind the NL East Division-leading Washington Nationals. Clemens' next scheduled start is on Saturday at home against the Chicago Cubs, and he is slotted to face the Cubs' John Lackey.
He joins former Westfield High School and George Mason University standout Justin Bour with the Marlins, and is the seventh player from Northern Virginia to appear in the big leagues this season.
Others from the area to appear include Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Brandon Guyer (Herndon), San Francisco Giants reliever Javy Lopez (Robinson) and outfielder Jarrett Parker (Colonial Forge), Atlanta Braves infielder Brandon Snyder (Westfield) and New York Yankees reliever Conor Mullee (Broad Run).
